Off Leash Dog Parks for Queen Anne and Magnolia
Full Description:
Thank you for showing your support for new dog parks in the Magnolia and Queen Anne Neighborhoods! Parks has been reviewing public comments from the June 27 and June 29 meetings, as well as calls, letters and emails, and will be making decisions regarding potential sites for new off-leash areas sometime in the near future. Once Parks has reviewed the public comments, and if there is sufficient support for new off-leash areas, they will designate sites for pilot off-leash areas. Under Seattle law, an off-leash area must begin as an 18 month pilot. After the pilot term, Parks reviews whether the park was successful, and decides whether to make the site a permanent off-leash area.
Currently, Seattle Parks is considering the following parks for potential off-leash areas: Magnolia Manor, Magnolia Park, Thorndyke Park, David Rogers Park, and Kinnear Park. At this time, it doesn’t look like Discovery Park is on the table for *this* new off-leash areas selection process. While COLA certainly would love a dog park in Discovery Park, and in fact, that is one of our long-term goals, it appears that that would happen in years rather than months. For this reason, and because the neighborhood sites identified in this public process would serve Magnolia and Queen Anne now, COLA supports creation of off-leash areas in at least two of the parks currently being considered. And, remember: an off-leash area in Discovery Park doesn’t preclude other dog parks in the Magnolia and Queen Anne neighborhoods. So, if you want a dog park in Discovery, feel free to tell Parks, but don’t forget to express your support for the current parks process!
As you may be aware, opponents of dog parks have been actively organizing, and have been sending their comments to Parks. If you haven’t already, it is very important that you email your comments, support and suggestions to Lana Krisman (lana.krisman@Seattle.Gov) before the final decisions are made. Thank you very much for your time and support!
